Alena Moulton: “I want to give girls the opportunity that I think females deserve”

Stoke City women’s head coach, Alena Moulton, talks about the challenges faced on her coaching journey and how her martial arts background taught her to continue to step forward.

The warm-up hadn’t even started when Alena Moulton, Stoke City women’s head coach, was aware she was already being judged by those watching. 

“I was setting up and it was a conversation in the dugout [that I was aware of].  They were like, ‘oh, she's only on her A licence because she's female and she's black,’” explains Moulton, who worked as Nottingham Forest’s Regional Talent Club Techncal Director before joining Stoke in 2019. 

“The [opposition] manager at the time was talking to a black male coach. They were having a conversation and he said, 'you'll go on it because you're black'.
