Canada FA’s Jasmine Mander encourages coaches to communicate with parents before there is a problem to solve.

Learning:

• Creating opportunities to communicate with parent and player

• The importance of learning more about each individual in your squad

• Communicating before problems or issues arise

Open communication between coach, player and parent should take place before there is an issue to be solved, explains Canada Women’s National team performance analyst and former Vancouver Whitecaps coach, Jasmine Mander.

“When I take over a new group I love to sit down one-to-one with the player and their parents and get to know them,” explains Mander, who coached young players at Vancouver for seven years before being appointed into her new role.

“I would hate it if the first conversation was in a stressful context, when there's been a playing time problem or there’s a question that the player might be uncomfortable with.
