Learning:

• How to use memorable language in your coaching

• The power of ‘three’ and repeating your message

• Simplifying the game for your players

“Shut down, slow down, sit down, stay down, showdown” is how Dick Bate, former FA elite coach manager and national coach, helped coaches and players understand some of the key detail involved in 1v1 defending.

Bate, who sadly passed away in 2018 aged 71, was widely recognised as one of the best coach educators of his generation and renowned for his command of language and innovative approach.

“Nowadays people think it's new and sexy to look outside of football for ideas,” explains Rutter, who worked with Bate during two spells at the FA totaling nearly twenty years.
