Martin Diggle, head of coach development at Liverpool academy, outlines seven ways that clubs and coaches can provide a greater volume and variety of games for young players.

Learning:

• How a greater volume and variety of football provides more learning experiences

• How to design a games programme based on the needs of your players

• The importance of letting players find their ‘rhythm’ in a game

1. Leave players on the pitch for longer

I believe rhythm is a critical part of development when playing in games. I think we disrupt a player’s rhythm by taking players on and off the pitch too often.

If you're taking players off and they're having a reduction in their volume of football, that's a problem because they're not getting as many opportunities to experiment, understand how the game works and try things.

Players need to be working out what to do against different types of opponent.

2. Stay in one position to learn the game and solve problems
