Norway assistant coach, Brede Hangeland, believes coaches and managers shouldn’t ‘be acting’ with their players and instead must develop genuine and meaningful relationships that can lead to better results on the pitch.

“I think when you're a player and you play for a manager over several seasons, there are hours and hours of just watching them,” says the former Fulham and Crystal Palace defender, who joined the Norwegian national coaching staff as Player Manager [assistant coach] in 2020 after a 16-year playing career.  

“So, you see them interact with other people and over time, you build this image of who they are and they can't fake that.

“So, as a player, you get a really clear picture of who is this person. And, as player, I needed that picture to be really strong.”
