How players use their body and limbs to lever opponents off the ball and regain possession, is a key skill for players at all levels of the women’s game, says former England women’s assistant coach, Brent Hills.

“Players are getting much better at knowing how to use their body and limbs to either create space for themselves, protect the ball or win the ball off an opponent.

“You've got to get better at that now, especially out of possession, because of the refereeing interpretations of what is a good or a poor tackle,” says Hills, who currently works as a technical observer for UEFA and mentors a number of coaches in the women’s game.

“I think nine out of ten referees now would say a full-blooded 50/50 is a foul either way. So, you've got to be better at using your body and limbs to regain the ball without going to ground.”
